Harai-goshi into O-soto-gake
A defended Harai-goshi leaves your partner leaning back and heavy on their right leg. O-soto-gake attacks the outside of exactly that leg, in the direction they have already chosen to lean.

Step by step
The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.
- Take your usual right grips and turn in for Harai-goshi, your right leg sweeping across the front of their right thigh.
- Feel them settle their weight back and drop their hips to stop the sweep.
- Step your right foot back down to the mat outside their right foot rather than fighting the block.
- Swing your right leg past their right side and hook the back of your calf behind their right leg, keeping your chest tight to theirs.
- Drive forward and down over their hooked leg with both hands, your right shoulder into their chest.
- They fall straight back over the hooked leg; keep the sleeve and stay upright over them.
Receiving it
The sweeping thigh comes across the front of your right leg, and the defence that works is to sit your weight back and drop your hips. That defence is the invitation: your weight is now on your right heel, and their calf hooks behind that same leg from the outside. You go straight backwards over a leg you cannot step with. Do not reach back for the mat with a straight arm. Chin on your chest, free arm slapping, and let the held sleeve support your upper body.
VI judo notes
The whole switch happens along one leg, so keep your attacking leg in contact as it comes down: slide it past their thigh rather than lifting it clear and hunting for the hook. Their defensive weight change is felt as pressure coming back into your lapel hand, and that pressure is the cue to hook instead of sweep. Stay chest to chest so the second attack starts from contact rather than from a search.
