combination
Ko-uchi-gari into Seoi-nage
The small inner reap makes your partner snatch their foot back and settle their weight forward and low; the shoulder throw is waiting exactly there. A favourite of smaller judoka against taller ones.

Step by step
The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.
- Take your right grips and reap their right foot inwards with the sole of your right foot.
- Feel them snatch the foot back, their chest coming forward and down over their front leg.
- Pull their right sleeve down and across with your left hand so that weight keeps coming onto you.
- Spin in on the ball of your left foot, both hands staying on their right side, and drop your hips below theirs.
- Straighten your legs and turn your shoulders sharply to your left, loading them across your back.
- They come over your shoulder and land on their back; keep the sleeve to support the fall.
Receiving it
The reap asks for your foot and you give it your balance instead: snatching the foot back drops your weight forward and low, which is where the shoulder throw lives. Their hips arrive under yours before you have finished recovering. Do not reach for the mat over their shoulder. Keep your chin tucked, stay long, and slap with your free left arm as your back lands, with the sleeve still held.
VI judo notes
This is a smaller judoka's combination and it suits gripped-up judo, because both attacks happen inside arm's length. The reap is the question and their weight coming forward in your sleeve hand is the answer, so let your hands decide when to spin. Getting your hips below theirs is a matter of feel: if their belt line is not above yours, do not straighten your legs.
