Step by step
The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.
- Take both of their sleeves, your left hand at their right cuff and your right hand at their left cuff.
- Lift their left sleeve high with your right arm and spin in for Sode-tsurikomi-goshi, turning your hips across theirs.
- Feel the entry blocked: their hips stay back and yours cannot get underneath them.
- Keep the lifting arm exactly where it is, high and straight, so that side of their body stays open.
- Sweep the back of your right thigh up against the front of their right thigh, leg straight and toes pointed.
- They rotate over your sweeping leg and land on their back; keep the sleeve to steer the fall.
Receiving it
Your arm is carried high and stays there, which is what makes both halves of this work: whatever your hips do, that side of your body cannot close. When the hip entry is blocked, their thigh simply sweeps yours instead and the lifted arm keeps you turning. Do not fight to pull the arm down. Keep it long, chin tucked, and slap with your free arm as your back lands.
VI judo notes
Sleeve grips are easy to keep and easy to read, which makes this pair a good one from the gripped-up start. The block is felt as your hips meeting theirs and stopping, and the answer is to change the legs and leave the hands alone. Keep the lift high throughout: it is your reference for where their upper body is while your leg does the work.
