Harai-goshi countered by Utsuri-goshi

  1. Harai-goshi払腰
  2. Utsuri-goshi移腰

Utsuri-goshi answers a hip throw by accepting it and then taking it over. You absorb the entry, lift them off your own hip and transfer them to the other side.

Step by step

The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Feel their hip arrive across yours as they turn in for Harai-goshi.
  2. Drop your hips below theirs and wrap both arms around their waist from behind their attacking side.
  3. Brace your back and lift them straight up off the mat, taking the throw's momentum out of it.
  4. As they rise, swing your own hips through underneath them to the other side.
  5. Turn your shoulders and drop them across your hip onto their back.
  6. Lower them under control rather than dropping them; keep one arm supporting their back. Build this one up gradually.

Receiving it

You attacked, and the throw is not blocked so much as borrowed. First your entry stalls because their hips are suddenly below yours, then you are lifted straight up with nothing under your feet, then their hip swings through and you are coming down on the other side. Stay tight rather than struggling in the air, chin tucked, and slap with your free arm as your back lands. This is a big fall to receive: take it only from a partner who lowers you under control.

VI judo notes

You will know the counter has begun before you are lifted, because their waist wraps yours and your own hip loses contact with theirs. Countering, keep your chest against them right through the change of side so you never lose where they are, and lift with your legs and a straight back. Agree the drill first and add height slowly.
