Arm roll from the front ======================= Turnovers (turning a defending partner) The same principle worked from in front of a turtled partner rather than beside them. It reaches an arm that is tucked in tightly, and the syllabuses examine it as a separate item because the angle and the finish are different. Key points ---------- - Load their shoulders with your weight before reaching - Take the arm and turn their head the same way - Roll them diagonally, over the shoulder you have emptied Step by step ------------ 1. Your partner is on all fours. Kneel or crouch facing them, at their head. 2. Place your chest or shoulder on the back of their head and shoulders so their weight comes forward onto their arms. 3. Reach your right hand under their left upper arm, near the elbow, and grip the sleeve. 4. Lift that arm up and across their body while you turn their head the same way with your shoulder. 5. Drive forward and diagonally so they roll over the shoulder whose arm you have taken. 6. Follow them round and settle into a hold at their side as they land on their back. From the other side ------------------- A weight arriving on the back of your head and shoulders is the warning. Keep your head up, elbows in and hands wide, and consider moving forward into them rather than staying still, because a static turtle is the easiest thing to roll. VI judo notes ------------- Work by contact throughout: shoulders located, arm found at the elbow, head turned with your own shoulder. The roll direction is simply away from the arm you have taken, which you can feel rather than judge by eye. From Waza Book: https://wazabook.com/skills/arm-roll-from-the-front/
