Escape into Yoko-shiho-gatame past the legs =========================================== Escapes (getting out from underneath) The same passing problem finished on the other side: instead of coming all the way to a scarf hold you settle square across them in the side four quarters hold, which is quicker and harder to escape. Key points ---------- - Pin the hips first, then clear the legs - Go around the legs, not over them - Chest lands before your arms go anywhere Step by step ------------ 1. You are between your partner's legs on your knees, their knees against your sides. 2. Press both hands into their hips so they cannot turn onto their side. 3. Push their near knee down towards the mat with one hand and step your outside leg wide around it. 4. Drive your chest forward and across their body as your leg clears, keeping your weight heavy so no gap opens. 5. Land chest to chest across them at right angles, hips low and legs spread wide behind you. 6. Only now pass one arm under their neck and the other between their legs to their belt, settling into Yoko-shiho-gatame. From the other side ------------------- Once their leg clears yours the position is usually gone. Fight it early by keeping your knees tight and your hips mobile, and if they land across you, get your near elbow in against your ribs before they can settle their arms. VI judo notes ------------- Two contact cues carry the whole movement: their knee going down under your hand, and your own chest arriving on theirs. Keep the chest contact continuous and the position can be found and held without any visual reference.
