Turnovers · turning a defending partner
Turnover into Mune-gatame
The same problem finished square instead of at an angle. Rolling a turtled partner into the chest hold is quicker to arrive at than the scarf hold and gives away less space if they keep turning.

Key points
- Load their base with your chest before pulling anything
- Pull the far arm through, so they cannot post on it
- Land chest to chest, weight through the chest not the arms
Step by step
Left-handed: these steps are written right-handed, as the syllabuses write them. Read every left as a right and every right as a left, and the throw is yours.
- Your partner is on all fours. Kneel at their right side and put your chest across their back.
- Reach your left hand under their chest and take hold of their far, left upper arm near the elbow.
- Pull that arm in towards you so it comes off the mat and they can no longer post with it.
- Drive forward with your chest and pull the arm through, rolling them over their near shoulder onto their back.
- Travel with the roll and land square across their chest, your chest on theirs.
- Settle into Mune-gatame: your right arm under their far armpit, legs spread wide, weight through your chest and your head up.
From the other side
The give-away is a hand coming under your chest for your far arm. Keep that elbow tight to your own ribs and your weight back over your knees, and drop to a hip on the side they are pulling towards.
VI judo notes
Find their far arm by sliding your hand along the mat under their chest until you meet the elbow. Once it is off the mat their base is gone, and you will feel it go before they can correct.
