Turnover into Yoko-shiho-gatame =============================== Turnovers (turning a defending partner) A partner lying face down is a different problem from a turtled one: there is no gap to reach through, so you use their near arm and shoulder as the lever and roll them along their own length. Key points ---------- - Work on the far side of a flat partner, not the near side - The near arm is the handle: control it before rolling - Turn them along their body line, not across it Step by step ------------ 1. Your partner is lying face down on the mat with their arms tucked in. Kneel at their right side. 2. Put your chest on their upper back so they cannot get to their knees. 3. Slide your right hand under their right shoulder and grip their far, left lapel or the far side of their jacket. 4. Post your left hand on the mat past their head for base, and drive their right shoulder up and over towards their left. 5. Roll them along their own body line onto their back, following the roll with your chest so no space opens. 6. Land across them at right angles and settle into Yoko-shiho-gatame: one arm under their neck, the other between their legs to the belt, knees spread wide. From the other side ------------------- Flat on your face you have very little defence, which is why staying flat is a mistake. Get to your elbows and knees at once; if the shoulder is already being driven over, turn with it and try to come out on your knees rather than letting yourself be rolled flat. VI judo notes ------------- Contact tells you everything: shoulder found, far lapel gripped, chest heavy. Roll in the direction their shoulder wants to go and follow with your own body so you stay attached the whole way.
