Step by step
The whole movement in words, so no part of it depends on watching a video. Described in the standard right-handed form.
Left-handed: these steps are written right-handed, as the syllabuses write them. Read every left as a right and every right as a left, and the throw is yours.
- Your partner turns in for a hip throw. Before it bites, bend your knees deeply and sink your hips below theirs.
- Wrap both arms around their waist from behind their turned-in position, clamping their hips to your belly.
- Straighten your legs and thrust your hips forward and up: their body lifts clear of the mat, their feet swinging up in front.
- Hold the lift for a beat so their throw is fully dead, then step back a half pace.
- Lower and release them so they drop feet-and-side first onto the mat in front of you, your arms guiding the descent until they land.
Receiving it
Your hip attack is swallowed: their hips drop below yours, arms clamp your waist, and you are lifted straight up, feet leaving the mat, your throw dead in the air. The landing is a drop rather than a rotation. Stay compact, keep your feet under you if you can, and take the mat with your feet and side as they lower you; a good partner controls this descent, and in practice you should agree beforehand how high the lift will be.
VI judo notes
The attack comes to you in contact, so you know the hip turn is coming before it bites: sink below them and clamp their waist. The lift tells you whether you have them squarely, and holding it for a beat kills their throw completely. Lower them under control rather than dropping them, because they are in the air with no idea where the mat is.
About this technique
The classical counter to hip throws: tori scoops uke's entering hips from behind, lifts, and lets uke fall in front.
Key points
- Drop your hips below uke's as the attack comes in
- Lift uke clear of the mat with the hips, arms around the waist
- Let uke slide down in front of you, guiding the fall
