Step by step

The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Take your right grips and move sideways to your left with your partner, so their right foot leads and their left foot follows.
  2. As their left foot travels towards their right and both feet are light, sweep the outside of their left ankle with the sole of your right foot, sending both feet along the line they are already going.
  3. Keep hold of their right sleeve as their feet leave the mat, so their head is supported and they land on their side.
  4. Follow them down at once, dropping chest first to the mat at their right side.
  5. Slide your right arm under their far armpit and bring your chest across their chest.
  6. Spread your legs wide, one forward and one back, and hold with your weight through your chest. Release the moment they tap.

Receiving it

Both feet go at once, which is why this sweep is the one that surprises people: there is no leg left to save yourself with and you land flat on your side. Slap early with your free arm, keep your chin tucked, and expect their chest to arrive across yours immediately afterwards. Turn towards them and get an elbow to the mat before their weight settles, because the chest hold only gets heavier.

VI judo notes

The sweep is timing on a moving partner, so drill the movement with a coach calling the space until it is yours. Keep the sleeve from the sweep all the way to the hold and you never have to search for their body on the mat: the held arm leads you to their side. Land chest onto chest rather than kneeling first and feeling for the position.
